Tielemans blames lack Of effort As United slip to seven‑Game winless streak

Manchester United have seen their winless run stretch to seven matches after a 4‑1 drubbing by Como in the Champions League, and midfielder Youri Tielemans has publicly singled out a lack of effort inside the dressing room as a key factor. The Belgian, who joined United from Aston Villa for £35 million, told that “there’s a combination of everything – tactical, technical, effort – and we need to try to do better at everything,” adding that the squad was “poor at everything” on Wednesday night.

Tielemans’ comments came after United fell behind within two minutes of the first half and again just before the hour‑mark, eventually conceding a 1‑0 half‑time deficit and a further three goals in the second period. “There was a lot said at half‑time to try and get back into the game, which didn’t happen,” he said, noting that the team was outplayed for most of the encounter.

The midfielder’s self‑criticism follows a similar outburst from captain Bruno Fernandes, who told Sky Sport Italia that the club has been “living in the past” and that “everyone at the club needs to understand that things aren’t the same anymore.” Fernandes also hinted that the lack of pressing and space given to opponents were tactical choices that left United vulnerable, while refusing to directly blame manager Michael Carrick.

United’s woes are not limited to the Champions League. A week earlier they suffered a 2‑0 loss at Atletico Madrid, where they were caught out after just 53 seconds. Defender Lisandro Martínez has already accused the hierarchy of insufficient summer investment, a theme that resurfaced when Tielemans was asked about squad depth and chose not to comment.

The mounting criticism has placed additional pressure on Carrick, who has been forced to defend his tactical approach while acknowledging that the players may not be willing to “run enough.” The manager’s response to Fernandes’ remarks was a pointed suggestion that the squad’s intensity is lacking, underscoring the growing tension between the coaching staff and the playing group.

United will look to halt the slide when they host Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon. Tielemans promised that the team will “apologise to the fans who travelled and those watching at home,” but emphasized that only on‑field performances can restore confidence.

With the club’s future direction under intense scrutiny, the statements from Tielemans and Fernandes signal a rare moment of internal honesty at Old Trafford, as United seek to reverse a dismal run that has left supporters and players alike disappointed.
