Israel demands admission of Hapoel Beer Sheva supporters in Alkmaar

In the photo the passionate supporters of Hapoel Beer Sheva are shown during their match against GNK Dinamo, a vivid picture of the Israeli fans. Today Israel is demanding that the same group of fans be allowed to attend the match against AZ in Alkmaar, despite the current ban.

Israel presses for a safety guarantee

Hapoel Beer Sheva plays on 15 October in Alkmaar against AZ. The local authorities have, out of safety concerns, decided to keep the Israeli supporters out.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded with outrage and demanded that the decision be reversed. In a statement, quoted by The Times, a request is made for guaranteed safety in and around the stadium.

Foreign Minister Gideon Saar is said to have discussed this with his Dutch counterpart Tom Berendsen. Israel continues to work to ensure that the supporters are allowed to come this week after all.

A spokesperson for the ministry refused to comment on the talks between Berendsen and Saar. He emphasized that no further explanation will be provided.

Nieuwsuur reported Monday evening that the Israeli ambassador had telephone contact with Alkmaar mayor Anja Schouten. The mayor's spokesperson confirmed that the decision to bar away fans is final and that the match on Thursday will go ahead without an away crowd.

The impasse underscores the tension between safety concerns and diplomatic pressure. While the Dutch city adheres to its safety policy, Israel continues to press for a reversal of the ban.
