In the Debrecen match, the captains of Ireland and Israel did not shake hands nor display their flags before kickoff, underscoring the political tension. The absence of these traditional rituals reinforced the protest message.

Hallgrimsson told the public broadcaster RTE that it was difficult for many players, but that they demonstrated their support for the protests against the war. He added that he hopes people understand the importance of drawing attention to Gaza.

Irish goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu decided to boycott both Nations League matches against Israel, refusing to take the field. His choice was cited as an example of personal commitment to the cause.

Ireland won 3-0 in Hungary, confirming its sporting superiority. The next encounter with Israel will be played on October 4 on neutral ground in Backa Topola, Serbia, because the Irish federation deemed it too delicate to organise the match on the island.
