Ireland reshuffle defence as Scales and Egan return for Austria clash

Heimir Hallgrímsson has made three changes to the Republic of Ireland side that beat Israel 3-0 on Sunday, bringing Liam Scales, John Egan and Finn Azaz back for the Nations League meeting with Austria at Aviva Stadium tonight, kick‑off in about 75 minutes.

The changes see Scales replace Jake O’Brien at centre‑back and Egan take over from Liam Kitching at left‑back. Finn Azaz returns to midfield, with Jayson Molumby rested, and is expected to sit deeper alongside Conor Coventry.

Midfield and attack options

Southampton’s Azaz offers a more defensive option, while Jack Moylan keeps his place after an impressive display against Israel. In attack, Adam Idah and Troy Parrott partner each other in a forward line that Hallgrímsson described as positive.

Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu is back in the squad but will sit on the bench after opting out of the Israel game on moral grounds. The starting XI therefore lists Caoimhín Kelleher between the sticks, with James Abankwah, Dara O’Shea (captain), John Egan, Liam Scales and Ryan Manning forming the back line.

Hallgrímsson hopes the refreshed defence and midfield will build on the confidence generated by the 3‑0 win over Israel, aiming to secure a strong result against Austria.
