Ireland‑Israel uncertainty meets Klopp defeat in Germany

Shortly before the duel between Ireland and Israel it was unclear whether the match would take place at all, while Jürgen Klopp in Germany had already experienced his first home game with a 0-1 defeat. Both events show how uncertainty and pressure of expectation shape the proceedings.

Even shortly before this duel it was not clear whether the match would be played at all. The Irish, whose criticism of Israel's actions against the Palestinians is particularly sharp, considered boycotting the game in the Austria group. After an internal vote they played, but deliberately refrained from a handshake with the opponent before kickoff.

Afterwards the Irish in Debrecen, where the match was held for security reasons, quickly made everything clear. Parrott (13.), Idah (16.) and Moylan (25.) swiftly provided a 3-0 lead.

In the end Austria's next opponent also won 3-0.

In Dublin this therefore leads to a top‑class match on Thursday.

Klopp expects victory, but loses

In League A, the first win of DFB team manager Jürgen Klopp was expected in Augsburg. After the 1-1 in the Netherlands, the emerging Greeks came to Germany for the debut of the hope‑carrier. Adeyemi came close to the lead (27., 32.) but did not score.

After the break – after a loss of possession by Kimmich – Ioannidis had the prime chance for the 0-1, but missed (67.). Seven minutes later it was his turn, Kimmich had been deflected, and Kourbelis was allowed to celebrate the outsider’s lead.

Klopp loses his first home game 0-1 – if anyone thought the failure lay solely with former coach Nagelsmann, they will be disappointed with the new national team coach.
