Iraola’s wing dilemma forces Liverpool to chase new talent

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola acknowledges that while the Reds have already bolstered the squad with defender Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes and forward Victor Munoz from Osasuna, a glaring void remains on the wing after the exits of Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate and injuries to Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni.

The departures of Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate have left a stark vacancy on the wing, a problem amplified by injuries to Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni. The loss of a prolific winger and other key attackers means Anfield urgently requires fresh options to sustain its attacking threat.

Iraola made clear that securing a quality winger is a non‑negotiable priority for the upcoming transfer window. He told reporters in Chicago, “When the market is open, you have to be always open to new options to improve the squad. Winger for example, we definitely need to sign a winger.”

The Reds have already added depth to the back line by signing defender Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes, a deal originally agreed in January. Despite this defensive reinforcement, the club continues to search for attacking reinforcements.

Liverpool also completed the signing of forward Victor Munoz from Osasuna this summer. Munoz provides an extra option up front as the team reshapes its offensive personnel.

The summer exit of transfer guru Michael Edwards from Anfield has further complicated Liverpool’s planning. Edwards’ departure removes a key figure who previously helped steer recruitment decisions.

Iraola highlighted the importance of veteran goalkeeper Alisson, saying, “I think he’s someone that definitely will help us in this process of adaptation of the new signings, of the new players, the young players.” The Brazil international’s presence is seen as essential for guiding newcomers.

Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has been linked with a move away, but Iraola rejected the notion, stating, “I think Alexis has been one of the best players of the club last year… I want to keep my good players.” The manager signalled that the focus will be on new arrivals rather than off‑loading core talent.

Looking ahead, Liverpool will analyse market offers, weigh costs and consider the impact of current injuries before finalising any further deals. Iraola warned that the ability to sign a winger will depend on market availability, financial terms and the recovery timeline of injured players, leaving the summer window open‑ended but purpose‑driven.
