Iraola may overhaul Liverpool midfield if Camara becomes viable

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has been tipped to make a big call to revive a midfield that he described as ‘not functioning’, with a potential January signing of AS Monaco’s Lamine Camara seen as the decisive condition after a goalless draw with Fulham on Saturday.

Mixed start and midfield woes

Under Iraola, Liverpool have had a mixed start to the campaign. The head coach is still learning the strengths of his new squad while the players adapt to his preferred style. This adjustment period has contributed to uneven performances across the league.

The issue became evident in Saturday’s 0-0 stalemate with Fulham. Liverpool failed to create clear chances and were out‑shot by the visitors. The lack of fluidity in the centre of the park left the Reds looking disjointed.

Critics argue that the club’s hierarchy left Iraola short by not reinforcing the midfield during the summer window. With limited new arrivals, the department has struggled to impose control. The persistent under‑performance has heightened pressure on the manager. The man at the helm knows a decisive change may be required.

Camara as potential solution

Liverpool expert David Lynch says the Reds ‘like’ Lamine Camara and could move for him in January if the right condition is met. “He’s clearly a very good player. He’s clearly a midfielder that Liverpool like,” Lynch told Anfield Index. The Monaco midfielder was linked with Chelsea earlier in the summer, but Lynch believes he could fit Liverpool’s needs.

Lynch also warned against treating Camara as a panacea. “I’m a bit worried about people heralding him as the solution to every problem Liverpool have got,” he said, noting the player operates in a different league where success may be easier to achieve. He added that data can be misleading, suggesting any decision will hinge on whether the midfield truly remains ‘not functioning’.
