Ipswich Town have opened an investigation after forward Abdul Fatawu was subjected to online racist abuse following his dismissal in the 1‑0 loss to Everton on Saturday, raising questions about player safety and the club’s response.
Club condemns abuse and launches investigation
The club posted on X that it is "aware of online racist abuse" directed at Abdul Fatawu and called the behaviour "completely unacceptable". It added that the investigation is being carried out alongside the Premier League and the relevant authorities. "We will continue to offer Abdul our full support," the statement read.
Fans and former players have also voiced outrage, with many condemning the abuse on social media platforms. The club reiterated its commitment to work with law enforcement to identify the perpetrator and ensure accountability.
Player background and recent incident
The 22‑year‑old Ghanaian winger was in the starting line‑up at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool when he received a red card after two bookable offences, contributing to Town’s 1‑0 defeat to Everton. He has made five appearances for Ipswich Town this season.
Fatawu joined Ipswich Town in July from Leicester City in a £20 million deal, signing a five‑year contract that runs until 2031. He scored nine goals in 44 appearances for the Foxes last season.
Internationally, the winger featured in all four of Ghana’s games at the 2026 World Cup, including the group‑stage clash with England, and has netted three goals in 32 caps for his country. On signing, he said: "I am proud to have signed for Ipswich Town. The ambition the club has is very exciting and I’m looking forward to being a part of that as we prepare for the Premier League season."
Supporters’ group Reach Tractors issued a statement demanding accountability, declaring, "We’re disgusted by reports of racial abuse directed at Abdul Fatawu. Racism has no place in football or society. Everyone at Reach Tractors stands firmly with Abdul." The club thanked supporters for their solidarity and urged anyone with information to come forward.
