Ipswich target £20m Fatawu to boost Premier League push

Ipswich Town are bolstering their attack ahead of their Premier League return, targeting a proven Championship scorer to add depth after a second promotion. The club have moved for 23‑year‑old winger Abdul Fatawu, whose £20 million transfer is being finalised as he undergoes a medical.

The £20 million deal will see Fatawu join Gary O'Neil’s side, known as the Tractor Boys, once his medical is passed. The transfer represents a significant investment for Ipswich as they build a top‑flight roster under their new manager.

Abdul Fatawu arrived on loan from Sporting Lisbon in 2023 and has featured in 100 games for Leicester City, scoring 16 goals. His experience includes a season in England after his Portuguese loan, showing he can adapt quickly to new environments.

His record of 16 goals in 100 appearances provides Ipswich with a proven scorer at Championship level. The winger’s experience on loan from Sporting Lisbon gives the Tractor Boys a player accustomed to rapid adaptation.

Fatawu becomes the fourth summer addition for the Tractor Boys, following striker Emersonn’s £26 million arrival from Toulouse earlier this month. Ipswich have also secured permanent deals for Cedric Kipre and Chuba Akpom after their loan spells, illustrating a balanced recruitment drive.

For Leicester City, Fatawu is the latest exit as new manager Russell Martin reshapes the Foxes squad for their upcoming League One campaign after relegation. The club has already moved on several senior players, including Jeremy Monga to Manchester City and Harry Winks to Cagliari.

Fatawu’s transfer will be completed once his medical is passed, after which he can join training with Ipswich. The club will then integrate him into a squad that must quickly adapt to the demands of Premier League football, a process noted alongside a Getty Images photo released with the announcement.
