Ipswich’s £20m gamble on Abdul Fatawu fuels Premier League ambition
Ipswich Town are spending roughly £20 million on Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu to plug a creative void as they chase Premier League survival, with Gary O’Neil’s side needing fresh attacking firepower and to strengthen the squad after a demanding Championship campaign.
Gary O’Neil’s squad will depart for the La Manga pre‑season camp in Spain on Monday. Ipswich want Fatawu available for part of those preparations.
The Ghana international impressed during the Championship, registering nine goals and seven assists across 44 league appearances. His pace, creativity and direct style made him one of the division’s standout attacking players. Those qualities convinced Ipswich to commit a significant fee.
Ipswich Town have verbally agreed a deal worth around £20 million to sign the Leicester City winger. Fatawu is now awaiting a medical, expected to take place next week before the move can be completed. The medical will determine his fitness ahead of the Premier League season.
Ipswich are also close to completing a double signing with Dutch goalkeeper Kayne Oevlen from FC Volendam. The 22‑year‑old’s deal can rise to £4.25 million, comprising an initial £3.4 million fee plus £850,000 in performance‑related add‑ons. He too will travel to La Manga after his medical.
Further summer arrivals include striker Emerson from Toulouse. Forward Chuba Akpom from Ajax also joins the squad. Centre‑half Cedric Kipre completes the trio, all intended to bolster the squad for the top‑flight challenge.
For Ipswich Town the signings provide depth and competition as they rebuild for Premier League survival. Abdul Fatawu gains the opportunity to test himself at the highest English level. Kayne Oevlen also secures a chance to compete for the goalkeeper spot under O’Neil’s guidance.
Fatawu’s transfer hinges on passing his medical next week, after which the deal can be finalised. Similarly, Oevlen’s move will be confirmed after his medical assessment.
