Ipswich boss Gary O’Neil mourns father in heartfelt Instagram post

Graham O’Neil, the father of Ipswich Town manager Gary O’Neil, has died. The Tractor Boys’ boss announced the sad news in an Instagram post on Thursday, posting a Getty image of his father. In the caption he wrote: “Thanks for everything Dad, I couldn’t have done any of it without you. You taught me football, you taught me values and you taught me how to look after everyone that’s important to me. What an incredible example you set. I’ll miss you forever mate!”

Ipswich Town also marked the loss with a statement on X, saying: “All at Ipswich Town are deeply saddened by the passing of Gary O’Neil’s father, Graham. Our thoughts, condolences and love are with Gary and his family at this incredibly sad time.”

Carabao Cup exit and reflections

The tribute came two days after the Tractor Boys were eliminated from the Carabao Cup, losing 4‑2 to Arsenal. Ipswich had already conceded all four goals before the hour‑mark, but Anis Mehmeti pulled one back in the 62nd minute and Chuba Akpom added a consolation strike in second‑half stoppage time.

Despite the defeat, Gary O’Neil, who was in the dugout, highlighted positives. “I thought they had a right go and stuck at it,” he said. “It didn’t feel like a 4‑0 game at any point, but the quality they have meant they got into that position. We found a way to fight our way back into it.” He added that the team managed to give minutes to several players and still posed a threat, praising Arsenal’s defensive solidity while noting Ipswich created problems.

Next challenge at Everton

O’Neil will lead Ipswich Town against Everton on Saturday, with kick‑off scheduled for 3 pm. He confirmed he remains focused on preparing the squad despite the personal loss.

He concluded that the upcoming fixture offers a chance to build on the positives identified against Arsenal and to honour his father’s memory with a strong performance.
