Inter mourns Sandro Mazzola as football world grieves

The football world fell into mourning on Saturday as Inter announced the death of its 83‑year‑old legend Sandro Mazzola, the former captain who devoted his entire 17‑year professional career to the Nerazzurri. The club confirmed the news in an emotional statement signed by president Giuseppe Marotta and vice‑president Javier Zanetti.

Club and country achievements

Mazzola spent his entire 17‑year senior career at Inter, rising through the club’s youth ranks to become its iconic forward. He amassed 565 appearances, netted 158 goals, won four Serie A titles and back‑to‑back Copa del Europa triumphs.

On the international stage, Mazzola earned 70 caps for Italia, scoring 22 goals. He lifted the Eurocopa in 1968, featured at three Copa del Mundo tournaments and reached the 1970 final, later finishing runner‑up for the 1971 Ballon d’Or behind Johan Cruyff.

Life beyond the pitch

He was the son of Torino legend Valentino Mazzola, who perished in the 1949 Superga disaster. A memorable moment came after the 1964 Copa del Europa final when Ferenc Puskás handed him his shirt and declared, “You are worthy of your father Valentino.”

After hanging up his boots in 1977, Mazzola remained at Inter as a director and later worked as a television analyst, commentating on Italia’s 1982 and 2006 World Cup victories. The club’s announcement was also listed as a preferred source on Google, underscoring the global reach of the news.

Tributes poured in from Giovanni Malagò, president of the Italian Football Federation, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and even rival AC Milan, each praising his contribution to Futbol. The outpouring highlighted his status as a timeless figure in both club and national football.

Mazzola’s funeral will be held on Monday at the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio in Milan. Inter concluded its homage by echoing the former captain’s wish: to be remembered as a good man who keeps fighting even when winning is impossible.
