Inter Milan spend €30m on England full‑back Djed Spence after World Cup

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that 26‑year‑old England full‑back Djed Spence has completed a permanent move to Inter Milan, with the Italian club paying €30million (£26m) for the player weeks after his standout World Cup performances.

Versatile defender joins Italian giants

Spence, who can operate on both sides of defence, has signed a five‑year contract with Inter, linking up with international team‑mate John Stones at the San Siro. The deal adds a versatile option to the Italian side’s back line.

The transfer was announced in a report by Nathan Ridley, Senior Sports Reporter21:59, dated 15 Aug, and featured ImagesDjed alongside a photo credited to Rico Brouwer/Soccrates/Getty Images. The announcement highlighted the €30million fee and the player’s Italian destination.

World Cup impact fuels move

Spence featured in all eight of England’s games at the World Cup, helping Thomas Tuchel’s side finish third. His performances on the global stage raised his profile and likely influenced Inter’s decision to secure his services.

Having impressed on the world stage, the full‑back brings experience from a tournament where England reached the semi‑finals, a factor that Inter considered valuable for their upcoming campaigns.

Tottenham look ahead without Spence

Spence arrived at Tottenham from Middlesbrough in 2022 for an initial £12.5m and made 59 appearances, contributing to the club’s Europa League triumph in 2025 under Ange Postecoglou. Despite Roberto De Zerbi’s desire to retain him, Spence opted to leave.

His departure follows first‑choice right‑back Pedro Porro’s new deal in June and the arrival of left‑back Andy Robertson from Liverpool, leaving De Zerbi to name a replacement ahead of Tottenham’s first game of the season against Brentford. The club will also host Charlton in the Carabao Cup second round and face Newcastle in their first home league match.

In a farewell message, the 26‑year‑old wrote, “A special chapter comes to an end… Time for a new chapter now, but Spurs will always have a place in my heart.” The announcement was posted ON the club’s official channels.
