Inter Milan legend Sandro Mazzola dies at 83 years old

On Saturday morning the Italian football world received sad news: the Inter Milan legend Sandro Mazzola died at the age of eighty‑three. The long‑time forward, son of Torino hero Valentino Mazzola, leaves a defining legacy. His career, which spanned from 1961 to 1977 with the Nerazzurri, made him a symbol of the club.

Inter Career and Titles

From 1961 to 1977 Mazzola played exclusively for Inter Milan and made 565 appearances, scoring 158 goals. Under manager Helenio Herrera he became part of the legendary “La grande Inter”, which shaped football history with Catenaccio. During his time he won ten titles and became the central building block of the team.

Mazzola made his professional debut in 1961 against Juventus Turin and scored the consolation goal in a 1‑9 defeat. Despite the heavy loss he already showed the talent that would make him one of the club’s most important forwards.

He was available for the Italian national team from 1963 to 1974, earning seventy caps and scoring twenty‑two goals. With the Squadra Azzurra he won the 1968 European Championship.

The most significant match of his international career was the 1970 World Cup final against Pelé’s Brazil, which entered history as a match of the century. Despite the loss the duel remains a symbol of his class.

Inter Milan honoured him with the words: “There are those who go down in history … and then there are those who become the history of Inter themselves.” His final great wish was to be remembered as a good person who gives everything, even when a victory seems impossible, like in that 9‑1.
