Inter close in on Cuti Romero as €40m deal looms in Serie A
Cristian 'Cuti' Romero, the 28‑year‑old Argentine centre‑back who started in the Mundial final against España, is a step closer to signing for Inter Milan after a reported €40 million agreement with Tottenham, the report said on 03/08/2026 at 18:48 CEST. The reported deal, cited by La dello Sport, sets the transfer fee at around €40 million. Inter Milan have already reached an agreement with Tottenham, but contract talks with Romero’s representatives continue, with the player’s camp demanding a net annual salary of €6 million.
Romero, who was a champion of the Mundial 2022 and started in the final lost to España, is 28 years old. He joined Tottenham in 2021 from Atalanta after five years at the London club, having previously moved to Italy with Genoa in 2018 from Belgrano.
Inter’s sporting project, overseen by coach Cristian Chivu and the club’s board, aims to bolster the back line after the free‑transfer arrival of John Stones, who ended a ten‑year spell at Manchester City. The Italian side view Romero as a quality centre‑back to complement the existing options.
Que Romero dejará el Tottenham se sabe desde hace tiempo, and Atlético Madrid remains a shadow contender, but the Nerazzurri have secured the agreement with Tottenham. The move would also close the door on Benjamin Pavard, who recently returned from a loan at Marseille.
Currently Inter list six central defenders: Yann Bisseck, Manuel Akanji, John Stones, Alessandro Bastoni, Carlos Augusto and the incoming Romero. Adding Romero would give coach Cristian Chivu a deep pool of options for the upcoming Serie A campaign.
Returning to Italia, where he first played for Genoa, Romero could re‑establish himself as one of Serie A’s top defenders. His experience from the Mundial and Champions League matches with Tottenham may prove decisive for Inter’s defensive ambitions.
