Injury list swells as Alonso's selection options narrow at Chelsea
While the Blues sit mid‑table in the Premier League, a growing injury roster forces Xabi Alonso to juggle his options for the upcoming fixtures. Jamie Gittens, 22, has added his name to a list of seven other Chelsea stars currently sidelined, leaving the manager with a shrinking pool after the international break.
Injury toll grows
Gittens suffered an injury while representing England Under‑21s against Kazakhstan, being forced off after 39 minutes of a 4‑2 win. Chelsea confirmed his withdrawal and noted he left the stadium on crutches with a protective boot. The winger has yet to make a league appearance this term but has featured on the bench throughout the campaign.
Other absentees include Cole Palmer, who withdrew from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad with a minor muscular issue, and Joao Pedro, who missed a 2‑2 draw with Hull and a subsequent 3‑0 defeat to Brentford on 18 September after a knee injury. Reece James continues to battle a hamstring problem, while Moises Caicedo has logged only 14 minutes this season due to a calf issue. Summer signing Marco Palestra remains out of action, and Emmanuel Emegha has not yet debuted for the club.
League position under pressure
Under Alonso, Chelsea have produced an inconsistent start, currently occupying 10th place in the Premier League after securing just one point from their last three games. The limited points haul underscores the impact of the injury list on the team’s performance.
Alonso’s selection headache is evident as he balances the need for fresh legs with the desire to maintain tactical continuity. The manager has repeatedly named Gittens on the bench despite his lack of league minutes, highlighting the thin depth available.
Looking ahead, the club hopes several injured players could return for the Bournemouth clash on 10 October. Reports suggest Palmer, Pedro, James, Caicedo, and Palestra may be fit, potentially expanding Alonso’s options for the match.
Until those recoveries are confirmed, the Blues must navigate the next fixtures with a reduced squad, testing Alonso’s adaptability and the resilience of the remaining players.
