Inglaterra's hottest derby returns as West Ham face Millwall in Championship
On Saturday, West Ham United travel to The Den for the eighth round of the Championship, kicking off at 08:30 Argentine time (12:30 local). The meeting marks the first Dockers’ Derby since February 2012 and will be the hundredth official encounter between the two East London rivals.
Relegation reshapes the derby
West Ham’s recent drop from the Premier League has paved the way for the clash, and the Hammers arrive as leaders of the Championship. Millwall, by contrast, sit in the middle of the table, making the fixture a rare spotlight for both sides.
The rivalry stems from the 19th‑century port‑worker communities on opposite banks of the Thames River, known locally as the Rio Tâmisa. Both clubs were founded by labourers, giving the derby a deep social and territorial dimension.
Violent confrontations escalated in the 1970s and 1980s, when the Inter City Firm backed West Ham and the Bushwhackers represented Millwall. The feud claimed lives in 1976 and again in 1986, each incident linked to supporter clashes.
Security measures echo past violence
The 2009 League Cup tie at Upton Park saw pre‑match fights, a field invasion and a Millwall supporter stabbed, prompting a £115,000 fine for West Ham. For the upcoming game, Metropolitan Police will deploy around 400 officers and temporarily close South Bermondsey station to prevent crowd mixing.
Authorities have also introduced a special device plan, reflecting the derby’s notorious history of hooliganism that once inspired the film Green Street Hooligans in 2005.
Pop culture keeps the feud alive
The rivalry featured prominently in the 2005 movie Green Street Hooligans, a CLÁSICO QUE captured global attention, while the earlier film The Firm (1989) drew on the Inter City Firm’s notoriety. Even ahead of the match, a Millwall fan posted a video threatening to "cut the face" of West Ham midfielder Soucek.
Statistically, the sides have met 99 times before, with Millwall holding 38 wins, West Ham 34 and 27 draws. West Ham’s squad is more seasoned, having spent fourteen seasons in the Premier League, whereas Millwall have only featured in the top flight in 1988 and 1990.
