Infantino pitches World Cup sale as UEFA and Pro League chief balk
FIFA president Gianni Infantino, 56, has floated a plan to sell the World Cup’s commercial shares to private investors, describing the move as a ‘chance, not an obligation’, while UEFA and the chief executive of the European Pro League have voiced strong disbelief and warned of a possible boycott.
The British newspaper reported that Infantino wants to transfer the World Cup’s equity to private capital. He argues the sale could generate billions of euros for FIFA.
UEFA and a coalition of European football associations have publicly rejected the multi‑billion proposal, stating it threatens the sport’s integrity. The Pro League CEO, speaking on the matter, expressed astonishment at the idea and hinted that a boycott could be on the table.
