Igor Vetokele becomes Team Manager of the Red Devils, full profile

In the corridors of the Belgian Football Federation headquarters, microphones turn on as the new face of the staff prepares to speak. On Monday, the RBFA announced that Igor Vetokele was the new Team Manager of the Red Devils. The announcement, also relayed by the URBSFA, immediately sparked the interest of observers.

Appointment and role of the Team Manager

Igor Vetokele, thirty‑four years old, succeeds Piet Erauw, who left as soon as Mark van Bommel arrived at the head of the national team. The federation emphasized that Vetokele possesses “all the necessary qualities to support the Red Devils behind the scenes”. The announcement was even accompanied by an invitation to add the page to Google favorites.

Professional and academic background

A former striker, he developed in the academies of Ostend and La Gantoise before playing for Zulte Waregem, Lommel, Cercle, Sint‑Truiden and especially Westerlo, tallying just under two hundred matches in the first and second divisions as well as in the Cup. His overseas adventure took him to Copenhagen (2012‑2014) then to Charlton Athletic (2014‑2019), with loans to Zulte (2016‑2017) and Sint‑Truiden (2017‑2018) before joining Westerlo in the summer of 2019. He hung up his boots at Lommel in two‑zero‑twenty‑five.

After his retirement, he held recruitment and sports support roles within the Westerlo structure, while pursuing studies in legal practice, with a particular interest in sports law. This dual expertise, both on the field and juridical, is presented as a major asset for his new position.

On the international level, Vetokele earned fourteen caps with Belgium U21 before opting for Angola, where he amassed seven senior team appearances. This multinational experience enriches his perspective on top‑level football.

Mark van Bommel, almost one‑hundred percent satisfied, said: “There are always things to improve”, emphasizing the importance of a solid staff around the group. Vetokele expressed his enthusiasm, describing the role as a great honour and promising to put his experience at the service of the players and the staff.

In the weeks to come, the new Team Manager will have to oversee daily logistics, player support and the liaison between the group and the technical direction, to ensure a smooth operational envelope for the Red Devils.
