If Liverpool decide, Alexis Mac Allister faces contract fate

Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, 29, told Liverpool he was ‘very sad’ not to receive a new contract offer over the summer, noting his form last season barely justified an extension despite the £35 million Brighton transfer and a deal that runs until 2028.

Why Liverpool valued Mac Allister

Mac Allister has proved decisive against Spanish giants at Anfield, scoring when Real Madrid visited in 2024 and repeating the feat in 2025. In 2026 he produced a key intervention against Atletico Madrid, showing his ability to influence high‑profile European ties. The Independent, a US‑based outlet, highlighted the story, allowing readers to go to the comments section, bookmark it and noting that some comments were removed. Its tech team also reported on Elon Musk’s pro‑Trump PAC and the documentary ‘The A Word’ (Word'), reflecting the American media’s broader focus.

His teammates Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai secured long‑term deals – Gravenberch a six‑year contract in March and Szoboszlai a five‑year pact in July – while Mac Allister remained without an extension, making him the odd man out in the 2025 title‑winning midfield.

Liverpool now carry one of the world’s largest wage bills, having committed roughly £650 million to signings over the past fifteen months. The club has also lost several players on free transfers and sold others for reduced fees as contracts approached expiry.

Future options and contract implications

With his current deal running to 2028, Mac Allister’s transfer value could fall, inviting interest from other clubs. The departure of former director of football Richard Hughes has left his successor facing the dilemma of retaining a player whose form last season was deemed insufficient for a new deal.

Under new head coach Andoni Iraola, the deployment of Florian Wirtz as a No 10 reduces the midfield slots to two, limiting opportunities for Mac Allister to feature regularly.

Mac Allister said his agent informed him the club were not in a position to renew, calling it ‘very, very sad’ after winning the Premier League together. He added that he accepts responsibility for a below‑par season and is pleased for Gravenberch and Szoboszlai’s new contracts.

If Liverpool choose to extend his deal, they secure a versatile midfielder familiar with European pressure; if not, Mac Allister may seek a fresh start elsewhere, potentially on a free transfer when his contract ends.
