Icardi sees his license suspended in Argentina until 2099

Mauro Icardi, a 33-year-old striker, finds himself at the centre of two disputes: on one side the authorities of Buenos Aires have revoked his driving licence until 2099, on the other the former player claims to hold an Italian licence valid until 2029.

Reasons for the Argentine suspension

The decision, announced today, stemmed from a video shared on social media in which Icardi, behind the wheel of a moving car, sticks his head out of the window without a seatbelt, accompanied by model Eugenia “China” Suarez. The Argentine police have determined that the striker was driving with an expired licence.

The Ministry of Transport said: “We have suspended his licence as a precautionary measure; before he can obtain a new one, he must undergo an assessment to verify his fitness to drive. Road safety admits no exceptions.”

Icardi's reactions and football context

Icardi responded to the ministry claiming that his Italian licence is valid until 2029 and accused the authorities of exploiting his name for publicity, asking: “Think about fixing the roads to improve traffic in our country, instead of wasting time writing tweets and scratching your balls.”

The striker, a former Inter player, had been approached about a return to Serie A before coach Gattuso blocked the deal with Lazio.

Despite the suspension, Icardi will be able to apply for a new Argentine licence, but only after passing the assessment required by the authorities.

According to the authorities, the Argentine licence can be reinstated only when it is converted into a European one, highlighting the bureaucratic complexity of the case.
