I'm thrilled as Bundesliga youngster Ibrahimović heads on loan to Augsburg
Arijon Ibrahimović, the 20‑year‑old Bundesliga prospect, announced in July that he was "absolutely thrilled to be getting this opportunity here, to be able to play for the biggest club in the world". The statement reflected his ambition to break through at Bayern Munich, where he was earmarked as a future backup for Luis Díaz.
Why Augsburg needed a boost
After three matchdays, Bayern’s squad list showed Ibrahimović absent, while FC Augsburg were still searching for a reliable attacking option. The Bavarian side required regular playing time for the young forward to continue his development, a need that Augsburg could satisfy.
Loan deal and purchase option
Sporting director Christoph Freund explained that the loan to Augsburg was the best solution, noting the player’s need for consistent minutes. The agreement included a purchase option valued at eight million euros, according to media reports.
Roman Rummenigge, Ibrahimović’s agent, expressed surprise at Max Eberl’s public announcement of the loan, describing the situation as "blindsided". Despite the surprise, the move materialised, with Atalanta Bergamo and Werder Bremen also linked but ultimately missing out.
Ibrahimović made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut in a 4‑1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt and starting in the subsequent 2‑2 draw with Bayer Leverkusen. His contributions helped Augsburg secure a positive start to the season.
In Augsburg’s press release, the forward echoed familiar new‑signing rhetoric, stating, "I also want to keep developing and get plenty of playing time. That’s why I want to settle into the team as quickly as possible and do my part for a successful season."
Freund reiterated that the loan was intended to give Ibrahimović the platform he needed, adding that Bayern would continue to monitor his progress closely.
While the dream of establishing himself at Bayern has been deferred, Ibrahimović appears content with the detour, focusing on starts and goals at Augsburg.
