Hundreds of millions of euros threaten Manchester City – lawsuit wave and penalty
Hundreds of millions of euros Manchester City threaten not only with an unprecedented fine, but also with a wave of lawsuits that could reach a financial magnitude of several hundred million euros. As Athletic reports, several Premier League clubs have already hired leading lawyers to examine possible claims against the Skyblues.
Possible Compensation Claims
Simply put: If disadvantages are found, the affected clubs would be entitled to compensation payments in the millions. The report estimates that the total sum of all potential claims could be several hundred million euros.
Example Everton: FC Everton had to pay Burnley €41 million in June for a financial breach from the 2021/22 season. This precedent shows that substantial sums have already been triggered by rule violations.
Sun estimate: The Sun, in a highly simplified calculation, arrived at a sum of €616 million. Even though the number sounds large, it does not seem completely unreasonable in the context of the possible claims.
Legal Procedure
Legal steps can only be taken after the ongoing appeal process is concluded during this period. It is expected that Manchester City will lodge an appeal, and experts believe the process could take months or years.
Whistleblower tips: Rui Pinto, the whistleblower behind Football Leaks, said that in 2024 he handed over further data carriers to media houses and law‑enforcement agencies that have not yet been analysed. He emphasized that much more could still be uncovered about City and other top clubs.
Allegations and possible sanctions: Athletic revealed a few days ago that Manchester City was found guilty on 114 of 115 charge points. In addition to a points deduction and a hefty fine, forced relegations and even the stripping of titles cannot be ruled out, with results from 2009 to 2018 possibly being nullified.
The combination of a looming wave of lawsuits worth several hundred million euros and the already known precedents shows that the financial consequences for the Skyblues could go far beyond the pure fine. This could mean that the financial burden will sustainably cast a shadow over the sporting successes of recent years.
