Hummels eyes Borussia Dortmund return, but says wait
Mats Hummels told Sky Sport that he can imagine working for Borussia Dortmund again, giving fans hope of a future return while stressing that a permanent job will still take some time to materialise.
Career and retirement
The 37‑year‑old BVB star ended his playing career in the summer of 2025 after a final season with AS Roma. He previously featured for Dortmund between 2008‑2016 and 2019‑2024, accumulating a long‑term connection with the club.
Since hanging up his boots, Hummels has worked as a TV analyst and remains a recognised former national‑team player, but he has ruled out taking a fixed job at present.
Personal considerations
Hummels explained that his son lives in Munich, so he wants to keep his freedom and arrange his time flexibly, allowing him to spend more time with his family. This private reason means a day‑to‑day commitment at the club is not yet on the agenda.
When asked about a possible job, he made no concealment about his deep connection to the club, saying, “It would make me happy if it happens sometime,” while adding, “But that will still take a bit.”
He also praised the development of the German national team under his former Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp, trusting that Klopp’s uncompromising focus on winning will steer the side back onto a successful course.
Having worked with Klopp during Dortmund’s successful years, Hummels highlighted the coach’s clear priority: “For him everything is subordinated to winning, to serving the team.”
