Hull's shock Premier League debut follows record spending spree
Hull City stunned Manchester United 2-0 on the latter's Premier League season opener, delivering a surprise victory for the newly promoted side and earning three valuable points in their first top‑flight match.
Promotion back to the Premier League
Hull City finished sixth in the Championship last season and secured promotion via the play‑offs. The club last competed in the Premier League in 2017 and fell to the third tier in 2020, making this return highly significant.
Record‑breaking signings
Hull were active on the transfer market, adding eleven players and breaking their transfer record twice. Goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis arrived for about €23 million from Olympiakos, and a few days later Nobel Mendy was signed for about €25 million from Rayo Vallecano.
Both Tzolakis and Mendy proved immediately important in the first half, with the Greek keeper tested by Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha but remaining well‑placed each time.
Hull secure three points
After a quarter of an hour, a sharp corner cross found Oli McBurnie, whose shot forced United goalkeeper Senne Lammens to make a save; the rebound was calmly finished by Semi Ajayi for the opening goal.
Before the break, Nobel Mendy headed the second goal, converting a free‑kick to make it 2-0.
In the second half, Marcus Rashford entered for United, helping them gain more control but failing to create clear chances. Hull nonetheless produced the best opportunities, with Mohamed Belloumi and substitute Cody Drameh missing long‑range attempts.
United kept Joshua Zirkzee on the bench and continued without the injured Matthijs de Ligt, while Bryan Mbeumo threatened the Hull goal until Tzolakis demonstrated why the club paid a premium for him.
De Greek keeper kept a clean sheet, and Hull celebrated their League‑seizoen return to the top level with three valuable points.
