Hull City’s early strike leaves Manchester United reeling

On a bright Saturday afternoon at the Kingston Communications Stadium, Manchester United suffered a painful start to their Premier League campaign, falling 2-0 to newly promoted Hull City after conceding early and failing to respond. The visitors were unable to create clear chances, while Hull City capitalised on set‑piece opportunities.

Early goal gives Hull City advantage

At the 17th minute, Hull City’s Semi Ajayi found space on the edge of the box. A corner delivery was flicked on, and the defender headed the rebound past the United goalkeeper to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

United struggle to find answer

Just after the interval, Nobel Mendy rose highest to meet Regan Slater’s measured cross. His header rattled the back of the net, sending the ball against the ropes and sealing a 2-0 advantage for Hull City. Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, who spent last season on loan at FC Barcelona, could not change the deficit, and Joshua Zirkzee remained on the bench for the entire match.

Voor the match, De Ligt finally trained after a half‑year back problem, but his involvement came too early to affect the outcome. The Dutch international’s return was noted as a positive sign despite the loss.

The result will be a talking point for CityManchester fans as United look to avenge the defeat at home against Ipswich next week, while Hull City travel to Coventry City. The photo credit reads © Action Images via ReutersNobel.
