HSV seal €9m deal for Fábio Vieira as club vows to grow

Hamburg's HSV have completed a €9m transfer for 26‑year‑old Fábio Vieira, signing him permanently from Arsenal after a season in which he netted seven goals and supplied five assists in 29 Bundesliga matches.

Why Hamburg pursued the Portuguese midfielder

Vieira’s contribution of seven goals and six created chances in 34 games across all competitions convinced HSV that he could become a key figure for the Red Shorts. His output matched the club’s ambition to improve after a poor start to the 2026/27 campaign.

Midfield maestro Merlin Polzin, who recently extended his contract, praised Vieira’s influence, noting the player’s willingness to work under his guidance. “I think it was important that HSV extended his contract,” Vieira said, adding that Polzin is “a great man, and a great coach as well.”

Player’s bond with the club and fans

Vieira highlighted the affection he feels for the city and its supporters, stating, “All the people around the city, and the fans are good people – they are always supporting us. It doesn’t matter if we win or lose, they’re always there for us.” He added that a club and fans who love you make him “much happier.”

The midfielder also stressed that the Bundesliga’s competitive nature and space for development were decisive factors. “The Bundesliga is really nice, it’s very competitive and there’s a lot of space to keep growing and developing,” he explained.

Implications for both sides

For HSV, the €9m fee represents a significant investment aimed at stabilising the squad after three early defeats and a goal‑difference of 0‑12. The club now looks to build momentum, targeting back‑to‑back victories as they travel to Hoffenheim.

For Vieira, the permanent move offers continuity and a platform to thrive without pressure, as he affirmed, “I don’t feel any pressure because I do what I love, which is playing football.” The transfer also provides Arsenal with a modest return on a player who struggled to cement a regular place.
