How Tidiam Gomis expands RB Leipzig's offensive options
Tidiam Gomis has developed into an increasingly important attacking force since his move from the French club Caen at the beginning of 2025 to RB Leipzig. In the first four Bundesliga matches of the 2026/27 season he scored one goal and provided two assists, having already accumulated 229 minutes of playing time.
Increasing playing time and contribution to the attack
With 229 minutes, Gomis is ninth among all Leipzig players, with only Antonio Nusa and Christopher Nkunku having logged more minutes so far. Nusa, who also contributed two goals and two assists, is so far the only player with more goal involvements for Leipzig this season.
Comparison to the previous season
Compared with the 2025/26 season, in which Gomis logged only 347 minutes in 18 appearances and contributed just one goal against Union Berlin, the current usage marks a clear upswing. Back then he was the twentieth player in the squad in terms of playing time.
Reasons for the breakthrough
A key factor is the changed situation in the squad: Christoph Baumgartner has emerged from a long‑term injury and Yan Diomande has left the club for Real Madrid. These gaps gave Gomis the opportunity, which he has consistently taken.
Coach Martín Demichelis already praised Gomis' work in training and his versatility before the season started. “He had a very good preparation and worked hard in various positions,” said Demichelis. “He can play on both wings or centrally and only needs to be ready to fight in different roles.”
After an impressive performance with two assists against Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday one, Demichelis explained why Gomis remained on the bench for the next game against Werder Bremen: “I brought on Bakayoko to give him a chance, and with Gomis on the bench I have a player I can substitute in three positions.”
The competition for attacking places remains strong: besides Nusa and Nkunku, Brajan Gruda, Assan Ouédraogo, Rômulo and Johan Bakayoko are fighting for minutes. Nevertheless, Gomis has so far kept his place and in June 2026 received his first call‑up to the French U21 national team, after having already trained in May 2025 in the extended preparation squad of Gérald Baticle.
Demichelis emphasizes that Gomis' rapid rise in Leipzig's attacking line gives the coaching staff every reason to continue relying on him. The young Frenchman has therefore not only won the coach's trust, but also attracted the interest of the French national team.
