How Man Utd must juggle five departures and contract renewals for 2027

How Man Utd must juggle five departures and contract renewals for 2027

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick will confront a raft of contract decisions next year as several senior players enter the final year of their deals and five high‑profile stars are set to leave. The club, branded Red Devils, must also decide whether to extend captain Bruno Fernandes, whose current contract expires in twelve months. The article, published on 29 Sep 2026, recorded a View count of 3 and featured three Images. Jake Bayliss, a Senior Sports Writer for Sport, highlighted the looming choices.

Centre‑backs Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez both have contracts ending next summer, each with an option to extend for a further year. Maguire, who will be 34 by season’s end, may be released in favour of younger prospects such as Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven. Martinez, an Argentine who has started more than 20 league games only once since 2022, could see his extension triggered if he remains fit, though another lengthy injury spell would jeopardise his future.

Defensive reshuffle ahead

Left‑back Luke Shaw is in the final months of his deal and, unlike the aforementioned stars, lacks an option to extend for another twelve months. The 31‑year‑old has been a regular since overcoming fitness issues, but United failed to sign senior cover, making a short‑term extension attractive. Young left‑back Harry Amass, aged 19, also nears the end of his contract and may seek regular football elsewhere. Manchester United (MAN, UTD) will need to decide whether to retain these options or recruit new talent.

Goalkeepers and loan returns

Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton is set to become a free agent at season’s end and could retire at 41. United’s only senior keepers on loan are Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir. Onana is in a second spell at Trabzonspor without a purchase option and is unlikely to feature in United’s plans. Bayindir has joined Celta Vigo, which can make his stay permanent for £3.5 million; both will retain a year on United contracts after their loans finish.

Midfield and academy prospects

Midfielders Jack and Tyler Fletcher are approaching the end of their deals and will face fierce competition for places. Academy talents Sekou Kone, Ethan Wheatley and Chido Obi hope to impress during their time away from Old Trafford. The first‑team lacks an orthodox striker, so a prolific season for Obi or Wheatley could propel them up the pecking order.

United’s recent recruitment has focused on midfield, yet the defensive department may also be reshaped ahead of 2027. While United will be eager to extend their talisman’s stay, the Red Devils are set to make many more difficult calls next year, balancing experience against emerging talent.

These contractual crossroads will define the shape of Manchester United’s squad for the 2027 campaign, influencing both short‑term stability and long‑term planning for the club’s ambitions.
