Hot lead on Alaba’s future promises confusion

The hot trail to Alaba’s future is causing confusion: After a five‑year stint at Real Madrid, the 34‑year‑old defensive all‑rounder David Alaba has been clubless and without a new role since his contract expired in the summer. Having earned 117 caps for the Austrian national team, note, most recently as a star at FC Bayern, he has not yet found a new club.

The defensive all‑rounder’s contract with the Royal side ran out in the summer, leaving Alaba without a commitment since then. The lack of a role currently has him active on the free‑player market.

Rumours suggest that the Austrian international could embark on a new adventure in Italy’s Serie A. The speculation arose after Lazio Rome was mentioned as a possible suitor.

Lazio’s Interest and Conflicting Reports

The newspapers Il Messaggero and Corriere dello Sport reported concrete interest from the Laziali in Alaba, while Tuttomercato stated that the interest has cooled. According to the latter, there is still interest, but no signing is being pursued at the moment.

Lazio’s sporting director Angelo Fabiani emphasized: “The market for free agents remains open. I have preferred to keep some spots in the squad free in order to monitor such situations closely.”

Lazio’s Defensive Needs and Transfer Activity

Lazio continues to seek experienced reinforcements for the defence. In the summer the team lost Mario Gila to AC Milan for €30 million, while Danilho Doekhi was already signed on a free transfer.

Thus Alaba’s future remains uncertain and the ongoing uncertainty leaves both fans and experts waiting for a clear signal on whether the 34‑year‑old international will belong to a top European club in the future.

A possible move to Italy would relieve Alaba not only sportingly but also financially, as he would not demand a transfer fee as a free player. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether Lazio will keep the necessary squad places free.
