Hoops seal title at jubilant Tallaght Stadium as rivals falter

Under the floodlights of Tallaght Stadium, a sea of 8,023 supporters roared as Shamrock Rovers' Hoops clinched the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division title, sealing a 4‑0 win over Sligo Rovers with a game to spare.

Historic title haul

The championship marks the Hoops’ sixth league crown in the past seven campaigns and the 23rd overall in club history. Securing the trophy with a match still remaining underlines their continued dominance of Irish football’s top tier.

The decisive moment arrived late in the first half when Adam Brennan struck twice in quick succession. His first goal arrived in the 39th minute, followed by a second just two minutes later, putting the visitors on the back foot.

Bohemians fall as Shelbourne win

Meanwhile at Dalymount Park, Bohemians (Bohs) were forced to match the Hoops’ result to keep the title race alive. Shelbourne’s win over the Dublin side meant the title race effectively ended, confirming the Hoops as champions.

Aaron Greene added a third goal and Dylan Watts completed the scoring, sealing a 4‑0 win in front of the jubilant crowd. When news of Shelbourne’s victory filtered through the city, celebrations erupted across the stadium.

The club deliberately chose not to display the trophy at Tallaght, opting instead to present it during their final league fixture at Dundalk next Friday. This decision adds a ceremonial climax to the season’s close.

Matt Healy, Naj Razi, Michael Noonan and Danny Grant all missed the match through suspension, while Jack Byrne remained sidelined after a knock against Galway United. Former Sligo captain Will Fitzgerald was recalled, and Gary O’Neill, returning after a cancer diagnosis, entered as a late substitute to a standing ovation.

Early chances and defensive lapses

Sligo Rovers began brightly, with Graham Burke’s corner finding captain Pico Lopes, who was denied at point‑blank range by keeper Liam Hughes. Later, a cross from Kaiyne Woolery was mishandled by Hoops goalkeeper Ed McGinty, who failed to clear three times before the ball fell to Brennan.

In the 71st minute Brennan’s shot was deflected onto the head of substitute Aaron Greene, who headed home from a yard out. Dylan Watts then volleyed from the edge of the area to make it 4‑0, sealing the match.

At the final whistle the supporters poured onto the pitch, reveling in another league triumph. The starting XI featured Ed McGinty, Oluwatunmise Sobowale, Daniel Cleary, Roberto Lopes, Lee Grace and others, while Arnold Hunter officiated the encounter.
