High demand vs free‑agent status: Gudelj’s Italy move looms

Aan interest is no shortage for Nemanja Gudelj, the 34‑year‑old Serviër who can make the step to the Serie A. Today (Vandaag) the former Ajax and AZ midfielder is listed as a free agent after his contract with Sevilla expired on 1 July. Udinese have already spoken to him and offered a deal lasting until mid‑2027 with an optional extra year.

Udinese’s pursuit was reported by Nicolò Schira, who said the Italian club hopes to strengthen its squad with the experienced defensive midfielder. The club’s offer includes a contract until mid‑2027 and an option for another season, indicating a long‑term plan for the player.

Bologna have also been linked to Gudelj, according to the same Italian transfer journalist. While Bologna’s interest is confirmed, Udinese appear to be further ahead in negotiations, having already held talks and presented a concrete contract proposal.

Beyond Italy, the Royal Antwerp side owned by Marc Overmars and Spain’s Cadiz CF are mentioned as possible destinations. Overmars’ connection adds a Dutch twist to the saga, showing that interest is not limited to the Italian league.

Gudelj’s résumé includes spells at Ajax and AZ, where he developed into a hard‑tackling midfielder before moving to China and later Sevilla. At Sevilla he featured in every competitive match last season, started almost all games and even wore the captain’s armband for the Spanish club.

De ex‑Eredivisionist spent 2009‑2017 in the Eredivisie after breaking through from NAC Breda’s youth system. His experience in the Dutch top flight and recent leadership role at Sevilla underline why several clubs are eager to secure his services.

The contrast between a flood of interest from multiple clubs and Gudelj’s free‑agent status highlights a pivotal moment in his career: a decision that could see him return to Italy’s Serie A or take a different path in Belgium or Spain.
