Hertha BSC chase first Osnabrück triumph in 45 years

Hertha BSC extended their winning streak on Sunday afternoon as they beat VfL Osnabrück 3‑1 at the Bremer Brücke, delivering the first victory in Osnabrück for the Berlin club in 45 years and sparking fresh Euphorie among the Berliner supporters.

Historic win breaks four‑decade drought

Die Siegesserie of Hertha BSC found its Fortsetzung in Osnabrück. Inmitten the Euphorie, the Berliner side celebrated another Erfolg at the Bremer Brücke. Sowohl Hertha BSC als auch der VfL Osnabrück gehören zu den ältesten Vereinen in Fußball-Deutschland.

On Sonntagnachmittag the two Klubs met again, with the happy Ende for the Berliners. Hertha, often called the Alte Dame, lifted the Sieg 3‑1, extending a run that began four decades ago. The last triumph in the Stadion of the Osnabrückers came 45 Jahre ago, on 17 October 1981, when Thomas Remark scored in the 21st minute, followed by Jürgen Mohr and Werner Killmaier within three minutes for a 3‑0 finish. In the Geschichte of Hertha BSC, this marks the first Mal since that 1981 encounter.

Forty‑five years later three different players found the net. Josip Brekalo opened the scoring in the 50th minute, Kevin Sessa added a second in the 70th, Jonathan Gomez made it 2‑0, and Farid Alfa‑Ruprecht sealed the victory. About 1 400 fans from Berlin were present, chanting old songs such as “ob es regnet oder schneit, jeder hat für Hertha Zeit” and newer chants like “100 Punkte Hertha BSC”. Gustaf Nilsson and Selim Telib made their debuts, while Oluwaseun Adewumi started for the first time, and Sessa celebrated his first Hertha goal after two years.

Am coming Saturday evening the league leader will visit Dynamo Dresden at the Rudolf‑Harbig‑Stadion. Das Ostkurve Hertha BSC has called for a boycott after DFB penalties imposed following April riots. Consequently, the club will not rely on its own supporters in Dresden.
