Heracles and Almere City vie for first period title and play‑off ticket
Tonight, all twenty clubs in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie take the field for the final matchday of the first period. Heracles Almelo host RKC Waalwijk at Deventer, while Almere City prepare to meet FC Eindhoven at home. Heracles sit three points clear of Almere City and enjoy a superior goal difference of plus four, meaning a single point is enough to clinch the period title and the first play‑off ticket.
Period title on the line
The winner of this round will be crowned period Kampioen and secure the inaugural play‑off berth. Heracles entered the weekend as favourites after they could have lifted the Bronze Shield last week, but a draw with Helmond Sport postponed any celebrations. A victory against RKC now restores their chance to finish the period on top.
Heracles only need to avoid defeat to lock the title; a loss would hand Almere City a route to overtake. Should the Almelo side fall at home, the trailing club must win their match and overturn the four‑goal difference gap.
Almere City’s task is clear: they must beat FC Eindhoven and improve their goal difference by four to eclipse Heracles. A win would bring them level on points, and a superior goal difference would hand them the period crown and the coveted play‑off slot.
Other fixtures that could shift the table
In Breda, NAC Breda host MVV Maastricht. The Dutch side are still feeling the impact of Carl Hoefkens’ dismissal after five rounds, with Rick Kruys now in charge following a home loss to Jong FC Utrecht. Since then NAC have recorded wins over De Graafschap and FC Eindhoven and a draw with Vitesse.
MVV, who opened the campaign strongly, have slipped into fifth place after a 4‑1 defeat to TOP Oss in the previous round. Their recent form adds another layer of intrigue to the night’s eight remaining clashes.
Further down the table, FC Volendam travel to face Vitesse. Volendam have yet to earn a point at home and have lost every away game this season, while Vitesse sit on fourteen points in eighth place, two ahead of the visitors. The two clubs met in the Eredivisie in 2024, adding a familiar rivalry to the mix.
At the close of the period, individual awards for best player, coach, talent and goalkeeper will be handed out, with the winners announced next week. Heracles’ breakout striker Jean‑Paul N’Djoli, who has netted eleven goals in nine appearances, is already a strong contender for the player honour. The action is captured in a photograph by Pro Shots / Wilco van Elk, underscoring the excitement surrounding the night’s decisive fixtures.
