Heidenheim’s €4.3 million windfall from Dorsch’s Toronto exit

Heidenheim will pocket roughly €4.3 million when 28‑year‑old German midfielder Niklas Dorsch moves to Toronto in the upcoming summer window, a transfer confirmed by Fabrizio Romano that also ends Dorsch’s spell at the BaWü border club, leaving a midfield vacancy to fill.

Dorsch, now 28, originally joined Heidenheim on a free transfer in 2018, beginning his first spell with the club. Two years later Heidenheim sold him to Belgian side KAA Gent for €3.5 million after Gent triggered his release clause.

In August 2024 Heidenheim repurchased Dorsch from Augsburg for the same €3.5 million, setting the stage for another profit on his eventual departure. The midfielder’s return marked his second spell at the club, during which he became a regular contributor.

Across the top flight he amassed 118 Bundesliga appearances, scoring four goals. In the 2. Bundesliga he featured 63 times and added three goals for Heidenheim.

Although the midfielder is valued at only €2.5 million, the €4.3 million net amount is described as an excellent deal for the Ostalbenschwaben region. The surplus over his market price underscores the financial benefit for the club.

A scouting column in Get German Football News notes that Dorsch’s skill set has begun to lapse. The report raises questions about his future impact.

During his second spell he became Heidenheim’s most expensive signing after Tim Kleindienst. His upcoming transfer will rank as the club’s third‑highest ever sale, behind Kleindienst and Leo Scienza.

He will leave German football, leaving Heidenheim to address the midfield gap amid concerns about his declining skill set. The club’s next recruitment steps will be crucial for maintaining its competitive edge.
