Harry Redknapp says Frank Lampard is England’s impossible‑job hope

Harry Redknapp says Frank Lampard is England’s impossible‑job hope

Harry Redknapp, the former Tottenham, Portsmouth and West Ham manager, says Frank Lampard would be the perfect candidate to take over the England job, despite the fact that an English coach has never won the Premier League and the national side has only rarely appointed home‑grown managers. His endorsement comes as the national side struggles to find a manager who can deliver both stability and ambition.

Redknapp, now 79 and out of management, told that the FA should ‘go English’ after Thomas Tuchel’s tenure ends. “Absolutely. Frank would be a perfect candidate,” he said, adding that Lampard’s one‑hundred‑odd England caps give him World Cup and Euro experience. He also praised Eddie Howe as another English option.

Lampard’s rise with Coventry

Lampard guided Coventry to the Championship title last season, ending the Sky Blues’ 25‑year absence from the top flight. After a miserable start to their Premier League campaign, he has got the club up and running, keeping the Blues’ hopes of survival alive. The Blues have already secured vital points, suggesting the turnaround is more than fleeting. Getty

English managers in the modern era

Redknapp lamented that English coaches rarely get chances at big clubs, noting Michael Carrick’s recent appointment at Manchester United as an exception. He pointed out that Carrick and Lampard are two of only three English managers in the Premier League, the third being Ipswich’s Gary O’Neil. The last Englishman to lift the FA Cup was Redknapp with Portsmouth in 2008, while Eddie Howe remains the only English manager to win the EFL Cup since 2004, guiding Newcastle to glory last year. Thomas Tuchel, who signed a two‑year extension earlier this year, is only the third foreign boss of the Three Lions after Fabio Capello and Sven‑Goran Eriksson.

If Lampard can replicate his turnaround at Coventry on the international stage, Redknapp believes England could finally combine home‑grown leadership with success, turning the ‘impossible job’ into a realistic ambition.
