Harry Kane shatters Dieter Müller’s record in the Bundesliga

While the Bundesliga had just written a new chapter with the Bayern English striker’s brace against Union Berlin, the same evening saw Dieter Müller’s record, set in 1977, collapse. In just 98 matches, Harry Kane has crossed the hundred‑goal mark, a feat that redefines the standards of the German championship.

A record eclipsing that of 1977

On Friday evening, Bayern’s English striker, Harry Kane, scored two goals against Union Berlin, taking his total to 100 Bundesliga goals. He reached this milestone in 98 matches, compared with the 129 required by Dieter Müller to reach the same tally. The previous record, dating from 1977, was therefore broken by about thirty matches.

At 33, Kane immediately added another goal, bringing his tally to 101 after last night’s brace. Since his move from Tottenham to Bayern in the summer of 2023, he has established himself as one of the league’s most prolific scorers.

Historical comparisons and upcoming challenges

To put this achievement into perspective, Gerd Müller needed 136 matches for his first hundred goals, while Robert Lewandowski took 168. Kane has also scored at least 26 goals in each of his first three full seasons, with a peak of 36 goals in his debut campaign, matched last season.

In the Premier League, the Englishman already has 213 goals, having reached a hundred goals in 141 matches with Tottenham. Thus, he joins the very small circle of players who have surpassed a hundred goals in two of the five major European leagues.

Bayern’s next target is to reach 200 Bundesliga goals. Only five players have crossed that threshold, with Gerd Müller achieving it the fastest in 234 matches. Kane will therefore need to add 99 more goals to etch his name into a new page of history.
