Ballon d’Or race heats up

With the Ballon d’Or voting deadline set for September 28 and the ceremony scheduled for October 26 in London, the race has narrowed to a handful of names. Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane, Rodri, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi are all in contention, but many observers see a two‑horse battle between Yamal and Kane. Yamal seized the opportunity to argue that the Ballon d’Or should reward the best player, not merely the top scorer. “I think the Ballon d’Or should go to the best player in the world, full stop. Not to a player who has scored 80 goals, because if you score 80 goals, you get the top scorer award for that,” he told Movistar Plus via Goal. He added that the award should recognise the player who makes commentators say, “That is a player who clearly stands out from all the others.”

When asked about Yamal’s remarks, Kane said, “I don’t want to talk too much about myself. I speak on the pitch. Everyone is different. Lamine Yamal has had a great season, and so has Michael Olise. The Ballon d’Or is not in my control.”

Later, he added, “I don’t know the intention behind what he said. He is an amazing player… Mbappe, Michael Olise, Rodri… there are a lot of candidates.” Kane concluded, “Everyone has the right to express their opinion in the way they want. This does not depend on me. As for me, I am enjoying everything that is happening a great deal. I will simply wait to see what happens. I will carry on doing my job on the pitch, and then we will see how things turn out.” When the Opening ceremony approaches, the vote will decide whether his record‑breaking season is enough to claim the Ballon d’Or.
