Harrogate Town signs 20‑year‑old Archie Baptiste, eyeing squad depth
Harrogate Town have secured 20‑year‑old centre‑back Archie Baptiste from Middlesbrough on a two‑year contract, with the transfer fee undisclosed. The move gives the young defender a chance for regular senior football after a loan spell at Rochdale where he did not feature.
Harrogate Town’s recruitment chief Lloyd Kerry explained that the club sees Baptiste as a player eager to play men’s football and a good fit for their squad, emphasizing the focus on depth rather than heavy expenditure. The undisclosed fee reflects the club’s strategy of strengthening the roster without large outlays. Kerry added that both parties feel the move is mutually beneficial.
Baptiste spent the 2023‑24 season on loan at Rochdale but did not make a single appearance, leaving him keen for a fresh start. The lack of game time motivated his desire for regular senior football at Harrogate.
He joined Middlesbrough, commonly known as Boro, in June after progressing through Tottenham Hotspur’s academy, a pathway that led to his professional debut. His development at the London club paved the way for senior opportunities.
Baptiste featured for Middlesbrough during the club’s pre‑season fixtures, with a photograph supplied by Shutterstock highlighting his readiness to compete at senior level. These appearances demonstrated his capability to perform alongside established professionals.
He later made a solitary appearance in the Championship for Middlesbrough, adding senior experience to his résumé and underscoring the club’s belief in his potential. The transfer gives Harrogate a young centre‑back with Championship exposure, while Baptiste gains the platform to play regularly and develop further.
