Hannover 96 consider Sandro Wagner the logical next coach

Hannover 96 have terminated Christian Titz after a weak start to the 2. Liga campaign and are now looking at former striker Sandro Wagner as the most suitable replacement, a view reinforced by a Global Soccer Networks data analysis.

Boldt pulls the plug on Titz

Sport director Jonas Boldt, who only took charge in June, said the club had earned only four points from five matches and just one win, a return he did not trust to continue. "This decision gives us the possibility to readjust," Boldt explained, adding that he had never become warm with Titz.

The Daten analysis is clear: Wagner scores the highest on both playing style and squad compatibility, making him the top Wahl for the ambitious Club.

Wagner emerges as data‑driven choice

Wagner, a former national team forward, earned his coaching credentials as co‑trainer under ex‑Bundesliga boss Julian Nagelsmann and helped Unterhaching rise to the 3. Liga in 2023, before being dismissed by FC Augsburg after eleven matchdays in 2025. Other candidates such as Alexander Blessin and Loïc Favé have also been contacted, but Wagner remains the favourite among the Andere options.

He prefers a 3‑4‑2‑1 formation that blends possession with rapid transition, aiming to move the Ball quickly from positional play into vertical attacks toward the opponent’s goal. This approach mirrors the aggressive, fast‑paced Fußball that Hannover displayed under Titz’s 4‑3‑3, but with centre‑backs nudging slightly inward and a clear number nine leading the line.

Wagner’s preferred personnel – Marcel Hartel, Lars Gindorf, Emir Sahiti, Mustapha Bundu, Husseyn Chakroun, Benjamin Källman and Benedikt Pichler – already fit his system, meaning the Club would need little reshuffling. He would simply reinterpret existing roles, becoming a bit less patient and more aggressive in the final third to increase presence in the opposition’s penalty area.

Martin Kind, chairman of the board, praised Wagner’s optimism, charisma and personality, stating he believes Wagner can convince the squad and drive them back to the Bundesliga. "He has the Strahlkraft to inspire the players," the 82‑year‑old told.

In the meantime, U23 coach Lars Barlemann will act as interim coach, taking charge for the home fixture against VfL Bochum at 13.30 on Sunday, a match broadcast from the NDR Livecentre. The club continues to speak with several other coaches while the final decision is pending.
