Hamburg target Sebastiaan Bornauw as Leeds face cut-price defender sale

Hamburg have placed Leeds United defender Sebastiaan Bornauw on their shortlist as they search for an experienced centre-back before the Bundesliga season begins.

The German club want a ready-made starter after Luka Vuskovic returned to Tottenham following an impressive loan spell. Bornauw ticks several boxes: he knows the Bundesliga from spells with FC Köln and Wolfsburg, is 27 and brings the aerial presence Hamburg believe their defence lacks.

His experience means there would be no settling-in period, which makes him an attractive option as the new campaign approaches. Leeds United may listen because Bornauw slipped down Daniel Farke’s pecking order last season.

The Belgian featured in 12 Premier League matches during the 2025/26 campaign, making five starts and playing 428 league minutes after his £5.1 million move from Wolfsburg. Hamburg have several names under consideration and formal negotiations haven’t started, though the interest appears genuine.

Leeds United should avoid a cut-price sale. The club already lost Pascal Struijk, while Jaka Bijol is still recovering from a serious injury, leaving Farke with fewer experienced central defenders than many supporters expected heading into the season.

Bornauw may rank fourth in the current pecking order, yet squad football changes quickly. Injuries, suspensions and fixture congestion can reshape selection plans within weeks. His height gives Leeds United a genuine advantage during defensive set-pieces, and few players in the squad offer the same physical profile inside either penalty area.

Leeds United blocked a January return to FC Köln because they couldn’t afford another defensive departure. That reasoning still carries weight despite fresh arrivals. Leeds hold the stronger negotiating hand in any potential deal.

Bornauw remains under contract until June 2029, while his market value sits around €8 million, or roughly £6.8 million. Hamburg need an established defender more than Leeds need an immediate sale.

A structured loan would represent the smartest compromise. Leeds should ask for a €1.5 million (£1.3 million) loan fee, insist Hamburg pay his wages in full and include a mandatory €9 million (£7.7 million) purchase clause if the German side secure Bundesliga survival.
