Hamburg mourns English legend Kevin Keegan with heartfelt tribute
Hamburger SV released a formal statement on Monday afternoon confirming the death of English footballing legend Kevin Keegan, the former 'Mighty Mouse' of the club, prompting the Bundesliga side and its supporters to join worldwide mourning in an emotional tribute.
The club posted the statement on the official Hamburger SV website, where a quote from former teammate Horst Hrubesch was featured. Hrubesch’s words highlighted Keegan’s character and influence on the squad.
Kevin Keegan spent three seasons in the German top flight with HSV between 1977 and 1980. During that period he became an integral part of the team’s attacking force.
He guided Hamburg to the Bundesliga title in the 1978/79 campaign. The championship remains a cornerstone of the club’s history.
Keegan also captured two Ballon d’Or awards while at the club, making him the only HSV player to be selected twice as France Football’s European Footballer of the Year. These honours underscored his elite status in world Football.
In his first season, a physical altercation that saw him punch a VfB Lübeck player during the winter break resulted in an eight‑week suspension. Keegan used that period to study the German language and integrate into the locker room.
He succeeded in both endeavors, earning the respect of local supporters and teammates. The statement praised his speed, dynamism, exceptional heading ability and unconditional dedication, describing him as embodying the spirit of teamwork and concluding that for the fans he will always remain a beloved figure.
Horst said Keegan was the kind of player every team would still love to have today, noting that he always put the team first and, with his attitude, fired up everyone around him. The tribute captured the high regard in which he is held.
