Hallgrímsson says Ireland will face Israel amid genocide debate

Hallgrímsson says Ireland will face Israel amid genocide debate

Heimir Hallgrímsson, manager of the Republic of Ireland, defended the FAI’s decision to fulfil the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Israel on 27 September and 4 October, insisting the team is ‘playing against genocide, not with it’ and warning of the intense scrutiny ahead.

Hallgrímsson challenges UEFA's double standard

Hallgrímsson said he does not understand why UEFA banned Russia but not Israel, both allegedly breaching statutes. “I haven’t had any explanation why one is banned, and the other one is not.” He added that playing the games does not normalise Israel’s presence. He reiterated that his primary job is to focus on football and protect the players from the surrounding noise.

FAI outlines strict match protocols

FAI chief executive David Courell explained that for the 4 October meeting in Serbia, the stadium will display “Respect messaging” around the perimeter instead of usual advertising. Sponsors will be omitted from official backdrops. He stressed protecting the players during the international window. The FAI also confirmed that all official signage will carry the same message, reinforcing the stance against hate.

Broadcast changes see UEFA feed replace RTÉ

RTÉ confirmed it will scale back its operation, providing no television studio coverage or its own commentators. Instead a feed supplied by UEFA will be used, with Live Video Review and Podcasts handling the broadcast. This marks a shift from previous coverage.

Traditionally a member of Hallgrímsson’s staff, usually John O’Shea, sits with a player at press conferences, followed by others. This week only the mandated UEFA pre‑match press conference on Wednesday will take place, ahead of the Kosovo game in Priština.

The Nations League fixture against Israel, originally scheduled for Dublin, has been moved to Serbia for 4 October, to be played behind closed doors. The FAI said the change aims to reduce external pressure and focus on the football.
