Haaland’s fitness fuels captaincy scramble for FPL gameweek eight

Haaland’s fitness fuels captaincy scramble for FPL gameweek eight

Enzo Maresca confirmed on Tuesday night that Erling Haaland (£13.7m) is fit to start against Aston Villa on Saturday, after being an unused substitute in Manchester City’s 5-1 Champions League win over AEK Athens. FPL expert Holly Shand notes that his availability instantly makes him the leading captaincy contender for the weekend.

Captaincy race heats up

Haaland has already netted eight goals from seven Premier League games this season, yet he has failed to score in his last four league appearances against Aston Villa. His price of £13.7m places him at the top of the value‑for‑money list for captains. Chelsea attackers also feature among alternative options, with Joao Pedro (£7.9m) offering five goals and three assists, the best fantasy asset the club has produced so far.

Cole Palmer (£9.7m) provides a higher ceiling because he takes penalties, making him a tempting captaincy backup if Haaland’s form dips. Both players sit above the midfield in terms of points potential for gameweek eight.

Midfield injuries and rotation

Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka (£9.6m) suffered a quadriceps injury in the Champions League on Wednesday night, adding to the injury list that already includes Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai (£6.8m) and Manchester City’s Antoine Semenyo (£8.3m), both ruled out long term. The loss of Semenyo gives hope that City’s midfield rotation will ease, potentially freeing up points for other midfielders.

Phil Foden (£6.8m) shone with a hat‑trick in midweek, while Jeremy Doku (£7.5m) has recorded three goal involvements in three games, keeping them in the mix despite the broader midfield setbacks.

Brighton’s hidden gems

Brighton assets dominate the defender and striker categories, with Maxim de Cuyper (£5.3m) leading the defensive pack with five goal involvements in seven games, effectively an attacking winger eligible for clean‑sheet points. Pascal Gross (£6.2m) sits one point behind, level with Haaland, and Luka Vuskovic (£5.1m) rounds out the top four defenders.

Bart Verbruggen (£4.6m) features among the top three goalkeepers, while striker Charalampos Kostoulas (£5.7m) is also in the top three forwards. Brighton have scored a league‑leading 23 goals, conceded only five, and kept five clean sheets in seven matches, underscoring their defensive solidity.

Additional fantasy considerations

Rayan Cherki (£8m) is attracting the most transfer traffic, and Leeds United’s Tarik Muharemovic (£5m) has logged a DefCons bonus on four occasions, adding a second assist of the season. Coventry City’s Bobby Thomas (£4m) leads with 84 defensive contributions and ten shots inside the box.

Josko Gvardiol, despite producing a goal, two clean sheets and three assists in his first five games, has been benched recently, and reports suggest Nico O’Reilly is struggling with a back problem, leaving Gvardiol a potential starter for upcoming fixtures.

With Haaland’s fitness confirmed, the captaincy dilemma, midfield injuries and Brighton’s value‑packed assets will shape how FPL managers assemble their squads for gameweek eight.
