Gus Poyet questions Manchester City’s guilty verdict amid lingering doubts

Gus Poyet questions Manchester City’s guilty verdict amid lingering doubts

Gus Poyet, former Sunderland boss and ex‑Premier League manager, contrasts the club’s on‑field triumphs with the off‑field scandal that now shadows Manchester City, saying the guilty verdict leaves too many unanswered questions.

Commission findings spark controversy

Earlier this week an independent commission confirmed that Manchester City had been found guilty of all but one of the 115 charges brought against them. The panel concluded the club arranged ‘sham’ sponsorship deals, filed misstated accounts and breached spending limits, artificially inflating revenues and reducing costs by more than £900 million between 2009 and 2018.

Success on the pitch versus allegations off it

During the period under scrutiny City secured three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and three League Cups, including the 2014 League Cup final in which they defeated Sunderland while Poyet was in charge. Since the arrival of Abu Dhabi owners, the club has added six Premier League crowns to its trophy cabinet.

Poyet’s reaction and calls for clarity

Poyet told Metro, “A big surprise for me is that they were found guilty of all the charges… it’s terrible for football.” He added that the verdict is “bad for the Premier League and the FA in terms of control”, noting that those who “tried to do everything correctly” now feel uncertain about the sport’s governance.

The former manager also highlighted timing coincidences, recalling that Pep Guardiola was asked “a hundred times” about the case, yet the final decision arrives after his departure. “I think the timing is terrible,” Poyet said via Ozoon, questioning whether the delay was intentional.

City have officially appealed the decision and maintain their innocence, but Poyet insists the outcome “leaves a sour taste”, especially given the lavish spending in the latter years of Guardiola’s tenure. He urges a public debate, proposing a televised discussion with representatives from the Premier League and Manchester City to address the “why and how” of the alleged financial misconduct.

“Is there a law that if you own a company you can sponsor your own team? Yes or no,” Poyet asked, stressing that fans need clear answers before forming an opinion. Until such clarification is provided, he believes the sport’s integrity remains in doubt.
