Gundogan lauds Maresca’s intellect and humanity as City looks ahead
Former Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan, who led the club to a treble in 2023, praised new manager Enzo Maresca’s “amazing qualities” on Monday, after the Italian signed a three‑year contract to replace Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium in England.
Gundogan was the City skipper during the 2023 treble‑winning season, a campaign that highlighted his leadership on the pitch. His experience gives weight to his assessment of the incoming coach.
During that same season, Maresca served as Pep Guardiola’s assistant, gaining insight into the tactical philosophy that delivered the trophies. His role under Guardiola linked him directly to the success Gundogan remembers.
Before joining City, Maresca was the former Chelsea boss, bringing top‑flight managerial experience to the Etihad. On Monday, he formalised his next chapter with a three‑year deal to become Manchester City’s head coach.
"As a coach, I think he has amazing qualities," Gundogan said, noting Maresca’s intelligence and precise understanding of his duties. He added that the Italian’s human side is “unbelievable” in the football world.
Gundogan continued, comparing Maresca to Pep, saying the new manager “has the intelligence to do the right decisions and to do the right tactical things, but then also on the human side, to get everyone on board.” He expects “probably 99% of the people inside the club will also be very happy.”
The contrast between Gundogan’s past triumphs and Maresca’s fresh appointment underscores a continuity of ambition at Manchester City. As the club moves forward, the former captain’s endorsement suggests a smooth transition and optimism for the future.
