Guirassy's brace cuts Reus lead as Dortmund triumph in Baku
On a balmy evening in Baku, 30‑year‑old Serhou Guirassy delivered both goals as Borussia Dortmund edged Sabah FK 2‑1 away, securing three vital Champions League points. Alexandre Wenn noted that the striker’s brace proved the German side’s answer when a scorer was needed.
Champions League goal tally
Guirassy’s strike haul in the competition now stands at 21 goals for the Dortmunder club, three shy of Marco Reus’s record 24. Reus leads the internal list, having amassed his total over 72 matches, while Guirassy has featured in just 27. The win also handed Dortmund three points in the group stage.
Scoring efficiency compared
At a rate of roughly 0.78 goals per appearance, Guirassy’s efficiency eclipses many peers. By contrast, Reus’s 24 goals came from 72 outings, a ratio of about 0.33. Since the start of the 2024/25 season only Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé have posted a higher Champions League scoring ratio.
How the brace unfolded
The first goal came after Guirassy reacted quickest to a rebound, while the second was a technically strong volley from a Joey Veerman cross. Veerman later told that “even when two defenders mark him, he is really dangerous on crosses”. The assist highlighted the partnership that is proving vital for Dortmund’s attack.
Guirassy himself placed the victory above personal accolades, saying Dortmund could have added more goals but the win was satisfactory. He stressed that the collective effort, not individual statistics, was the priority after the match.
Approaching club scoring milestones
Beyond Europe, Guirassy has reached 66 competitive goals for Borussia Dortmund, leaving him three behind club legend Lars Ricken’s 69‑goal record. Ricken’s tally was set as a BVB professional, and the remaining gap can be closed through Bundesliga or cup matches.
With three more Champions League strikes needed to equal Reus and four to surpass him, Guirassy’s rapid rise keeps two historic BVB names within striking distance, adding pressure and excitement to Dortmund’s European campaign.
