Guimaraes' wondergoal gives Arsenal victory over brave Sunderland
Brave Sunderland lost at home to Arsenal after Bruno Guimaraes scored a wondergoal, causing the Black Cats to fail to rescue a point. With the win Arsenal remain unbeaten in the Premier League, now three games without defeat. The match, played at the Stadium of Light, was decided by a penalty in the second half.
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya saves crucial penalty
Update: Five minutes after the break a penalty was awarded to Arsenal when Dan Ballard was brought down by Ezri Konsa. Le Fee took the penalty and struck the ball perfectly to the right corner, but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya stretched his arm and pushed the ball against the post, causing the penalty to miss.
Shortly afterwards Bruno Guimaraes received the ball on the edge of the sixteen‑yard box and struck a wondergoal from distance, which found the net under the crossbar. It was the Brazilian's first goal for Arsenal and put the Gunners instantly ahead 1‑0.
For the Black Cats Brian Brobbey and Robin Roefs made a good impression, with Brobbey repeatedly winning the ball in duels with Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa. Roefs later displayed an excellent save, but despite his efforts he could not prevent the deficit.
Jurriën Timber made his long‑awaited return for the Gunners after 105 days, after Ben White suffered a groin injury. His comeback bolstered Arsenal's defensive stability in the second half.
For Sunderland the pressure is now high; the side of Regis le Bris must quickly turn the tide when they play at home against AZ on Wednesday. The supporters, often referred to as the Black Cats, even call on Os to encourage their team.
