Guimaraes’ late strike ends Arsenal’s 27‑year English line‑up drought

Bruno Guimaraes’ decisive 70th‑minute strike secured a 2‑1 comeback win for Arsenal at the Emirates, ending a 27‑year wait for a starting XI with six English outfield players and restoring the Gunners to winning ways after a nervous spell when Leeds had taken the lead.

Leeds seized the initiative early in the second half when James Justin found the net, putting the visitors ahead. The Gunners responded ten minutes later as Riccardo Calafiori pressed close and stabbed home to restore parity. The match then hung in the balance.

Leeds entered the game unbeaten in the Premier League and had not recorded a win over Arsenal since 2003, making them a formidable opponent. Their dogged performance kept Arsenal on the back foot for much of the encounter.

English‑heavy line‑up makes history

Mikel Arteta opted for a revised starting line‑up featuring six English outfield players – Ben White, Ezri Konsa, Myles Lewis‑Skelly, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke. This marked the first such configuration in 27 years, the previous occurrence being a February 1999 clash with Manchester United. The earlier all‑English line‑up had included Lee Dixon, Nigel Winterburn, Steve Bould, Tony Adams, Ray Parlour and Stephen Hughes.

The heavy English presence was intended to restore the Gunners’ identity after a 3‑0 defeat at Brighton before the international break. Arsenal had three weeks to regroup and were staring at back‑to‑back league defeats before Guimaraes’ winner.

Leeds’ physical and committed style, as described by Arteta, tested Arsenal’s defensive organisation in the first half, with the visitors creating several chances inside the box.

Arteta hails comeback and league boost

Arteta expressed delight with his side’s character, saying, “We weren’t pleased about what we did against Brighton and today we had a chance to make it right. We wanted to prove we are something special and unique.” He added that the team needed to restore energy after going down early.

AFP reported that Guimaraes finished off a brilliant team move for the 70th‑minute winner, with Getty providing the accompanying photograph. The goal provisionally drew Arsenal level with leaders Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

The victory not only halted a potential run of consecutive defeats but also reinforced Arsenal’s position in the league, offering a crucial three points after a disappointing spell.
