Guimaraes’ £75m gamble meets early doubts as Arsenal midfield stalls
Bruno Guimaraes arrived at Arsenal as the Gunners’ £75 million marquee signing, yet the 28‑year‑old has struggled to find rhythm at the Emirates Stadium, hampered by an early‑season hamstring injury and mounting questions over his influence. The midfield roster, featuring Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and Myles Lewis‑Skelly, leaves little room for a slow start.

High expectations and investment
The 28‑year‑old was brought to the club from Newcastle in a £75 million deal to add depth to Mikel Arteta’s midfield. As Arsenal’s biggest signing this summer, Guimaraes was expected to become a focal point alongside established players. Yet the presence of Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and Myles Lewis‑Skelly creates a formidable engine room for the Gunners boss.
Myles Lewis‑Skelly, often shortened to Lewis, provides additional options that further tighten competition for places. The depth on offer means Guimaraes must quickly adapt to earn regular minutes at the Emirates Stadium.
Injury setbacks and scepticism
Guimaraes’ start was disrupted by a hamstring injury in the opening weeks, limiting his playing time and fuelling doubts about his impact. Former Newcastle captain Nicky Butt has publicly questioned whether the Brazil international can replicate his previous influence in north London.
Butt said on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast: “I think he’s a very, very good player, so I would say hit – but the reason why I’m not is because I think the team’s focal points have to be around him. I don’t think Arsenal will do that. I think there’s other players in that team to do that. He’ll be a miss.”
The contrast between a record‑breaking fee and early injury woes highlights the uncertainty surrounding Guimaraes’ future role at Arsenal. How the Gunners integrate him will determine whether the investment pays off or remains a lingering doubt.
